Customary Impurity

“If a woman has a discharge, and the discharge from her body is blood, she shall be set apart seven days; and whoever touches her shall be unclean until evening. Everything that she lies on during her impurity shall be unclean; also everything that she sits on shall be unclean. Whoever touches her bed shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. And whoever touches anything that she sat on shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. If anything is on her bed or on anything on which she sits, when he touches it, he shall be unclean until evening. And if any man lies with her at all, so that her impurity is on him, he shall be unclean seven days; and every bed on which he lies shall be unclean. ‘If a woman has a discharge of blood for many days, other than at the time of her customary impurity, or if it runs beyond her usual time of impurity, all the days of her unclean discharge shall be as the days of her customary impurity. She shall be unclean. Every bed on which she lies all the days of her discharge shall be to her as the bed of her impurity; and whatever she sits on shall be unclean, as the uncleanness of her impurity. Whoever touches those things shall be unclean; he shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. But if she is cleansed of her discharge, then she shall count for herself seven days, and after that she shall be clean. And on the eighth day she shall take for herself two turtle-doves or two young pigeons, and bring them to the priest, to the door of the tabernacle of meeting. Then the priest shall offer the one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering, and the priest shall make atonement for her before the Lord for the discharge of her uncleanness. “Leviticus 15:19-27

shameOk god, you got me. Now I am really stumped. How is it that you “created” me in your image (even if only to help pacify the dude you just created), made all of my parts and functions and now you are telling me that what is happening to me naturally is a sin?? Not only is it a sin, but I should feel embarrassed and ashamed about it and to take my embarrassment and shame one step further, I am to be set apart from everyone and everything because I am a dirty, dirty creature and everything I touch or come into contact with must be cleaned as if I am spreading some communicable disease! Why not just create a cleaner, more efficient way of disposing of our unused eggs, or create our bodies so that we never have to dispose of them in the first place? Why not just create us more to your liking so that you won’t look at us with such contempt? Why claim me to be unclean when my actions did not create the uncleanliness, yours did?! And why must we kill those two poor birds because of your poorly planned and executed creation? More innocent creatures felled by the hand of the all-powerful, all-loving god….

To me, these verses in Leviticus are written by some poor, ignorant, uneducated man that is confused and disgusted by the natural workings of woman. You know, the kind of guy that “doesn’t trust anything that bleeds for seven days and lives”; the kind of guy that won’t take a woman camping because she might attract the bears. Don’t go swimming in the ocean, you’ll attract the sharks! …Yeah, you know the kind. It is so blatantly obvious that the Bible was written by man, especially in this book, that I find it shocking that others have not yet caught on to the rouse. Especially women. The Bible expresses a TON of hate for women- this is merely a small piece of that.

On another note, did anyone catch this jewel of a verse?

“If a woman has a discharge of blood for many days, other than at the time of her customary impurity, or if it runs beyond her usual time of impurity, all the days of her unclean discharge shall be as the days of her customary impurity. She shall be unclean.” Leviticus 15:25

Let me repeat that first part again: “If a woman has a discharge of blood for many days, OTHER than that at the time of her customary impurity… She shall be unclean.” Now, correct me if I am wrong here, but if a woman is bleeding for days at a time other than her time of “customary impurity” wouldn’t she be DYING?! I mean, god should be less worried about how unclean she is, she could have been stabbed, she could be suffering from kidney failure, she could be bleeding internally somewhere! This woman needs help, not seclusion from the world for her uncleanliness!

That kind of shit really makes me hope, not for my sake, but for the sake of believers everywhere, that my previous point about the Bible being created by man is true. Man is likely to make a mistake like that. One that surely, back in the day when people took the writing of the Bible more literally, was responsible for the loss of many female lives. But a god? It wouldn’t be so stupid, would it? And if it was/is, people wouldn’t be so stupid as to believe in it or trust in it, would they??

  1. You really put on display some of the best bits in the Bible! And your commentary is totally excellent. It’s just shocking that even reasonable people believe the Bible is inspired by a benevolent deity – it’s a ridiculous jumble of nasty nonsense.

    1. Wow, thanks Violetwisp! And “nasty nonsense” is right. I only wish more people saw it the way we do, then more people could sit around and say, “Man, I can’t believe I used to believe that!” and the world would be a better place! Idealist, wishful thinking?

  2. I might add, Leviticus 15 to 18 it says the same thing about men as well, funny how you didn’t mention that…..

    1. I am aware that it does, but that wasn’t really the point of my post. Either way, stating that it also applies to men isn’t really helping your point… It’s all ridiculous.

    2. What was your point then? From what I’ve read you’re making it look like the person who wrote Leviticus or making god look sexist. When in fact they mention the same things about males as well…… Your quote “To me, these verses in Leviticus are written by some poor, ignorant, uneducated man that is confused and disgusted by the natural workings of woman. You know, the kind of guy that “doesn’t trust anything that bleeds for seven days and lives”; the kind of guy that won’t take a woman camping because she might attract the bears. 1. Right, the point if my post was about how the bible is sexist against women, in particular the book if Leviticus. Sure, the book also says things about men but that wasn’t the premise of my post. I could most definitely write a post about how the book of Leviticus says the same awful things about the “god-made” natural workings of the male body. It’s just as stupid either way you look at it; I just so happened to look at it from a feminist perspective.

        1. I know you never said he was evil, but a lot of people make him out to be. When in fact they aren’t thinking from a logical standpoint. Before people go hating on me saying “Well, logically he doesn’t exist.” Thinking from a logical standpoint the subject I’m talking about is. Why would a God give us a lot of things we can enjoy and let us choose from Good or Evil? If he was Evil he would have been like a dictator and take away our freedoms and torture us for his personal amusement. (Before someone blares out “There is no God.” Or “I don’t believe in God” Think from a Christian standpoint, or pretend God exists and Lucifer exists if you truly don’t believe they exist.) There are things God created and the things Satan/Lucifer twisted that god created. Satan hates God and hates everything he created, also is the master of deception and his main goal is to make people believe God doesn’t exist it make it look like God is evil.

  3. Maybe it’s not as stupid as you think? Maybe you didn’t interpret it the right way. Not everything written in the bible is literal. A lot of them are parables.

  4. What about right and wrong? Where do you think they came from? Truly if god was an evil god we wouldn’t feel joy, have colors, taste food, or even smell flowers. It’s not the part the “awful” things god made it’s the part Adam and Eve ate from the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and tainted them and we are all descendants of them. We were originally created perfect and without evil or taint. The tree was put there for freedom of choice between listening to God or choosing not to. If he really was evil, we wouldn’t have free will.

  5. About Leviticus making you feel ashamed because you’re a female. I’ll tell you what the verses were supposed to mean. 15:19 “If a woman has a discharge, and the discharge from her body is blood, she shall be set apart seven days; and whoever touches her shall be unclean until evening.” The reason they did that is because they didn’t have anti bacterial shampoo, rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizer, Peroxide bottles or band-aids. The reason they had to be separated was because of bacteria from the blood being out in the open for hours. Also if they were sick they would be away from the others to keep them all from being ill. This also goes for men too.

  6. The reason God gave them these rules or laws was for their own protection against bacteria and illnesses. Not because he’s being mean to them or making them feel ashamed something normal happened to them, but telling them to keep away from being near others or touching things to keep others from attracting bacteria from being in contact with it. Which goes for Blood, stool, urine, etc. As far as the sin offerings and burnt offerings, that was based on the laws of the people. They didn’t have to do it as what Jesus says way later. He said “Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me.” Meaning he doesn’t want burnt offerings, all they have to do is ask for forgiveness or talk to him through their faith and their heart. Not their literal “heart” but meaning they actually wish to ask for forgiveness or speak to him.

  7. I’ve thought from an Atheist’s point of view and I can understand how religions or faiths might not mean anything to them and how they might not exist. Some people might think that the concept of God and afterlife is an escape from the fact we all die at some point in life. But how is it realistically possible there is no creator? And how is it possible an accident of everything being here now the way it is happening so conveniently? Like almost all life uses water as their source of hydration and survival. All of our bodies must have water to survive, and we must have others organisms to survive. Plants need creatures that breathe oxygen to produce Hydrogen, animals need plants or other animals to survive. Our bodies are born with ways to consume water, air, and even have ways to dispose of waste. (Sorry to sound gross but it’s true.) How is it that all creatures animals and plants alike must have each other to survive? If we were an accident wouldn’t things be messed up or complicating? How is it we have sunlight to help our immune system and in the perfect spot to not burn us up or make us freeze to death? Or a moon that keeps tides from flooding the earth or water from drying up? They are each in perfect positions to keep us from being wiped out completely. We have plants that help us cure almost any illness, or even be helpful to the fellow life around them. And colors? Why do we see colors? There are different colors, there are different sound waves, we can talk and communicate, we have brains to store out knowledge a lot of animals have teeth to chew, eyes to see, ears and legs to help them with a lot of things. All of these things seem too convenient. How it’s possible there is no creator is beyond me, but to be honest. I feel like things are too “placed” to be an accident. I believe evolution, but believing there’s no creator? Meh that’s hard to think how that would make sense. Just because I can’t see or prove the creator doesn’t exist doesn’t mean they don’t exist truly. I believe there is more than just the physical part of everything.

  8. What i do not understood is actually how you are not actually
much more well-liked than you might be now.
You are so intelligent. You realize thus significantly relating to this subject, produced me personally consider it from numerous varied angles.
Its like men and women aren’t fascinated unless it’s one thing to
do with Lady gaga! Your own stuffs excellent.
    Always maintain it up!

  9. Wow. You seriously need to look up the context of which this book was written. It can’t understand the meaning and purpose it if its studied through the lenses of today’s society and culture. Try to do some research next time.

    1. And yet, here it is – still applied to the world today as if it is somehow still relevant. If your argument is context then that means you have no argument.

  10. Humans (Adam and Eve) have corrupted the image of God in which He has created them by sinning against God’s commandment. Thus, attitude to sin by rebelling against God has got into the blood of all humans and thus we are sinners by birth. With God only we can have a permanent meaning in what is good and bad for which we can live and die for. Otherwise all human morality is nothing but the filthy rags.

What do you think?
